Exploring a Career in Law

In March 2026, South West Community Legal Centre's (SWCLC) Principal Solicitor, Eleanor Yates, visited Bunbury Catholic College to provide students with an insight into careers in the legal profession. Drawing on her own experiences, Eleanor shared what inspired her to pursue a career in law and the pathway to becoming a solicitor in Western Australia.

Understanding the Legal Profession

Students learned about the qualifications and practical training required to practise law, as well as the broad range of career opportunities available within the legal sector. Eleanor also discussed the skills that are valuable in the profession, including problem-solving, communication, and a commitment to helping others.

A Day in the Life of a Community Lawyer

The presentation provided a snapshot of the day-to-day responsibilities of a solicitor, from meeting with clients and providing legal advice to conducting legal research, preparing documents, negotiating outcomes, and representing clients. Eleanor highlighted the rewarding nature of community legal work and the positive impact lawyers can have by improving access to justice.

Inspiring Future Career Pathways

Students were encouraged to ask questions about university study, career development, and working in the legal profession. The interactive session gave them the opportunity to hear firsthand about the realities of legal practice and the many pathways available to those considering a future in law.

SWCLC is proud to support local schools through career education initiatives and looks forward to continuing to inspire the next generation of legal professionals.
