South West Community Legal Centre Launches Safe Support

The South West Community Legal Centre has launched Safe Support, a new initiative designed to connect vulnerable clients with tailored support through referrals while they navigate the legal process.

March 2026

  • Safe Support assists vulnerable SWCLC clients including those experiencing or at risk of family and domestic violence through referral pathways.
  • The initiative uses an evidence-based Screen and Refer Tool to identify risk and connect clients with appropriate services.
  • Trained staff provide tailored referrals, follow up with clients and service providers, and collect data to improve referral pathways.

Introducing Safe Support

South West Community Legal Centre (SWCLC) has launched Safe Support to ensure its most vulnerable clients receive tailored support while navigating the legal process.

The initiative is delivered by a small team of SWCLC staff, who have undertaken family and domestic violence and trauma-informed training to support appropriate referrals to external services.

Safe Support has been awarded funding through the Women’s Grants for a Stronger Future 2025–2026 Annual Grants program, administered by the Department of Communities.

The Screen and Refer Tool

A key component of Safe Support is the Screen and Refer (S&R) Tool, informed by the Western Australian Family and Domestic Violence Common Risk Assessment and Risk Management Framework  (CRARMF), the SAILS Risk Screening Tool developed by Women’s Legal Service Western Australia, and the Code of Practice developed by the Centre for Women’s Safety and Wellbeing.

Connecting Clients with Support

Following screening, clients may receive cold referrals, including information and resources, or warm referrals directly to relevant community services.

The Safe Support team may also follow up with clients and service providers to understand whether support was accessed and identify any barriers to engagement.

Safe Support will collect data about referral outcomes, barriers to support and service engagement to help SWCLC strengthen referral pathways and improve outcomes for vulnerable clients.
